A comprehensive artists' book collection in wildly disparate formats, materials, and conception. The collection provides a synoptic view from the pivotal time when the artists' book was reborn and the museum escaped its enclosure. Highlights include an original catalog from the Artwords & Bookworks exhibit, four works by Ed Ruscha (Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Colored People, Prints and Publications, and The Sunset Strip), three works by John Baldessari (Fable, Throwing a Ball Once to Get Three Melodies and Fifteen Chords, and Brutus Killed Caesar), and two works by Johanna Drucker (Chased Press and As No Storm or The Any Port Party. The collection also includes the original exhibit catalog and a 2019 catalog by Barry Singer with color illustrations. Movements represented include mail art, neo-dada, performance art, fluxus, pop art, and many of the minor eddies of the period. "In early 1978 I was asked to be a panelist on a symposium dealing with Artist Books along with Jim Hugunin, publisher of the Dumb Ox. This was in conjunction with a show, Artwords and [Bookworks] co-curated by Judith Hoftberg and Joan Hugo at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, February 28-March 30, 1978. At the time I had a printing companyy, Grafix Artist Press and was printing the Dumb Ox. Artwords and Bookworks was one of the largest international exhibitions of artists' books and epehmera to take place during the 1970s. The subtitle of the exhibition was: The Museum is the Mailbox. Comprised of experimental works by approximately six hundred contributors the exhibition presented a diverse and provocative sampling of this alternative art form. Many of the books were made specially for this show. The exhibition traveled to Artist's Space, New York, June 10-30: Herron School of Art Indianapolis, September 15-29, 1978 and New Orleans Contemporary Art Center, October-November, 1978. This collection which I purchased in 1978, consists of 129 books personally curated by Judith Hoffberg...I have added to this collection a group of 21 books that display the same experimentation and spirit of freedom in interpreting what a book could/should be. Many of them were printed at Grafix Artist Press." -Barry Singer Comprises: Artwords & Bookworks. 74 artists' postcards by Richard Prince Mark Allen Lere, John Baldessari et al. 1978.
