Engraved portrait of Charles II, title printed in red and black, 35 engraved plates comprising 15 double-page, 8 single-page, 2 folding, and 10 of arms, numerous illustrations in text. (Some light stains to extremeties, Mmmm2 with marginal tear with loss.) Late 18th-century English red morocco, spine gilt, edges gilt (lightly rubbed). Provenance : Grace Pickard (signature on title); Duke of Sussex (armorial bookplate on pastedown); acquired from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1967. FIRST EDITION WITH THE FIREWORKS PLATE at p. 434 of this lavish folio with illustrations by Wenceslaus Hollar From 1659, Hollar and Ashmole gathered illustrations for this definitive work. After years of research, when it was finally published, this work firmly established Ashmole as an expert. Ashmole set out to preserve the knowledge and history of the Order, and Hollar's plates contribute a splendid visual historical record. Imprimatur leaf and errata present. Wing A-3983.
