Beschreibung:

Lot of real photo postcards, tintypes and other photographs of African American cowboys and Western scenes with African American subjects. Includes one tintype with an African American cowboy on one side; on the other is a gentleman who might be African, but it is a bit too dark to see clearly. Photos range from 2.25 x 3.25 in. to 8 x 10 in. Three are mounted on cards, 5 x 8.5 in to 8 x 10 in. One image appears to be a group of performers in "cowboy" outfits with blindstamp of a Paris photographer. Inscribed in German and dated 1928-29. Another photo of a middle-aged couple (he is African American, she appears to be Native American or mixed) has been "framed" with wall paper and apparently laminated on one side. (The plastic material is brittle and cracking now.) There are also 16 postcards: two are commercially produced colored images, two are of rodeo performers with photographer identified as "Marcell;" another half-dozen or so are studio images with Western backdrops (one, however, is of two young African American men in front of a backdrop painted with a circle of tipis). Provenance: Dr. John W. Ravage Collection of African American Photography Condition: Large image in rough condition. Others highly variable. Many of the postcards are used with typical surface soil.
