An den Architekten Gottfried Semper der nach aktiver Teilnahme an den1849er Dresdener Revolutionskämpfen wie sein Freund Richard Wagner aus Sachsen fliehen mußte und sich nun in London aufhielt. Nachdem sich in Paris und zunächst auch in London keine Arbeitsmöglichkeit für ihn geboten hatte, war Semper auf den Gedanken gekommen, beim reichsten (und deutschstämmigen) Mann Amerikas anzufragen, ob nicht in New York Bedarf an einem namhaften deutschen Architekten bestehe, so dass er sich dort eine neue Existenz gründen könne. Astor antwortet ihm ausführlich und gewissenhaft, rät Semper jedoch von dem Versuch in Amerika dringend ab. "... It will always give me great pleasure to be of service to any gentleman recommended by my friends Dr. Hedenus and Professor Hughes of Dresden, but at the same time I feel it my duty to speak with great frankness, and advise you strongly not to give up certain employment in England or Europe generally for uncertain prospects in the United States and more particularly in this City. It is true there is a great deal of buildings going on here now, but American Architects have always a preference, as understanding thoroughly the tastes of our people, the requirements of our climate, and being able to deal far better with our American Masons & Master Builders than foreigners. It is true also there are several foreigners here at present, and one German in particular, but though some of them have been here for some years, and are certainly men of talent, they cannot compete with our American Architects ...". Sollte sich Semper dennoch zur Überfahrt entschließen, wolle er ihm gern helfen, doch: "I fear you will be doomed to much of disappointment and perhaps to a long period of inactivity ...". - Bekanntlich begab sich Semper doch auf das Schiff, kehrte aber wieder um, als sich ihm in England eine Lehrtätigkeit an einer Kunstgewerbeschule bot. - Kleine Faltenrisse.
