ASTRONAUTS, MERCURY 7]. Group photograph signed by all the Mercury Seven astronauts: ALAN SHEPARD, JOHN GLENN, M. SCOTT CARPENTER, VIRGIL I. ("GUS") GRISSOM, WALLY SCHIRRA, L.GORDON COOPER and DEKE SLAYTON; inscribed in an unknown hand to Drury W. Wood, President of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, taken by an unidentified photographer, 28 September 1963. 20 x 23½ in., approximately, including margins . Professionally matted and framed. Unexamined out of frame. Ink signatures oblique in wide lower margin (Cooper's and Slayton's a bit pale). "THE RIGHT STUFF": THE ORIGINAL SEVEN: AMERICA'S FIRST ASTRONAUTS. The annual dinner of the Society for Experimental Test Pilots honored the Mercury 7 astronauts, who are shown here, standing in black tie. Their host, Drury Wood, to whom the photograph is inscribed, is second from the right, and he has added his signature to the lower margin. The men at this table were chosen in 1959 from some 110 pilot candidates to carry out the nation's first manned space slights. They were often referred to as the "original seven," or "Astronaut Group 1," and were the only group to fly on all NASA manned spacecraft of the 20th Century, beginning with Shepard's 1961 Freedom 7 flight that made him the first American astronaut.
