Title: Astronomiae Physicae & Geometricae Elementa Author: Gregory, David Place: Oxoniae Publisher: Theatro Sheldoniano Date: 1702 Description: [12], 494, [2] pp. Numerous diagrams in the text. Large engraved vignette on title page. (folio) 35.3x22.8 cm (13¾x9"), period calf. First Edition. The present work is notable for a number of reasons, being the first astronomical textbook on gravitational principles, and is important for containing the first publication of Newton's paper "Lunae theoria", the original statement of Newton's lunar theory. The author, David Gregory, was one of Newton's closest friends and associates. Two ink ownership signatures on title-page. Babson 71; Houzeau & Lancaster 9240; Sotheran I, 1652. Lot Amendments Condition: Leather worn and somewhat pock-marked, front cover detached; title page places on a stub, a few short tears including split along lower impression mark of vignette; first 30 or so leaves lightly dampstained in upper corner; internally very good, overall quite clean, worthy of restoration.
