Attributed to Alexis Simon Belle Portrait of a Scottish Jacobite Officer Wearing a Cuirasse and a Red Coat, within a painted oval Oil on canvas 31 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches (80 x 64.1 cm) An old label attached to the stretcher reads: Peint a Paris par A.S. Bella [sic] en aout 1726/The above was on the back of this portrait/[Signed indistinctly].
Glue relined. Scattered inpaint in a line of touches running from above the sitter's left eye (i.e. to the viewer's right) down the forehead, not touching the eye, but around it at both right and left, and then down the cheek below. There is also a small touch of inpaint on the right cheedk (viewer's left). The shadows around the chin have been strengthened. Some scant touches as well to the cravatte, a few places on the coat, and on the background. the upper left arc of the oval has been strengthened. All of these restorations have been done very carefully and professionally some years ago.
