Attributed to Andrea Mantegna (1421-1506) The Flagellation: With the Pavement (B. XIII, p. 227, no. 1; H. V, pp. 17-18, no. 8; R.A./M.M. cat., pp. 195-6, no. 36) engraving, late 1460's, a superb impression, printed in a rich, black ink and displaying excellent contrasts, a small patch of missed printing near the lower left corner being the only minor flaw, watermark Pot surmounted by a Cross (similar to Br. 12502, R.A./M.M. wmk. 16, Troyes, 1533), trimmed inside the platemark, but unusually complete, with a small to narrow blank 'margin' beyond the outer borderline on three sides, shaved just inside the borderline at the left but retaining the band of diagonal shading to the left of the seated soldier, four short repaired tears and a very small made-up loss at the left edge, a pale brown water stain at the upper right corner, a tiny hole lower right, an old pen and ink inscription 'flagelation du Seigneur' near the lower edge with associated ink spots above it to the right, the sheet in unusually fine condition S. 404 x 315 mm.
