Fine Arts Society, London, United Kingdom, no. 12723. note: Gilbert Stuart was an extremely prolific artist, executing more that 1,100 portraits in his lifetime. Based on the style of the sitter's hair and dress, this particular portrait was most likely painted during the 1780s when the artist was working in London. It was during this time that Stuart studied closely with American painter Benjamin West and mastered the techniques of the English grand manner. This period of his career proved to be extremely influential and after five years in London, Stuart finally achieved fame, becoming one of the most sought- after artists in England alongside contemporaries such as Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds
