Attributed to Peter Paul Rubens Study for the Head of a Woman Oil on paper laid to canvas 18 1/2 x 15 inches (47 x 38.1 cm) Provenance: Goudstikker collection, Amsterdam Private collection, New York Spanierman Gallery, New York Literature: Michael Jaffe, "Rubens before 1620, with Particular Reference to Aspects of His Commissions for the Company of Jesus," in Caterina Limentani Virdis, Francesca Bottacin et al., Rubens dall'Italia all 'Europa, exhib. cat., Vicenza, 1992, 18-19, illus., 20. Rubens is thought to have created this oil sketch while working on the modello for his altarpiece of the Miracles of St. Francis Xavier, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (circa 1617-18). This painting was illustrated in the 1992 exhibition catalogue Rubens dall'Italia all 'Europa, in which Michael Jaffe proposed that Rubens had made this study to refine his conception of the figure of the mother holding a dead child at the painting's lower left, in order to create a stronger image of the mother's grief than he had in the figure as originally conceived. See Jaffe in "Rubens before 1620, with particular reference to aspects of his commissions for the company of Jesus," in Caterina Limentani Virdis, Francesca Bottacin, et al., Rubens dall'Italia all 'Europa, Vicenza, 1992, 13-20. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
There is an area of repair about the size of a quarter on the lower edge close to the lower right corner. There is also a repaired 1 inch horizontal tear in the same area. There is also a smaller area of repair on the lower margin at the center, and a few touches elsewhere: one tiny spot on the right cheek; two small touches on the cloak in the lower left quadrant; and a few touches in the background in the upper right quadrant. There is no further restoration under UV light. Essentially this work is in sound condition.
