Portrait of Mrs. Burke wearing a white cap.
Pencil on paper, oval. 4 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches (11 x 9 cm). The verso inscribed "Mrs. Burke" and in another hand "P. E. Falconet/ Mrs. Burke." Provenance : Sotheby's London, 12 January 1980, lot 118. The sitter is most likely Mrs. Edmund Burke (1734-1812) née Jane Mary Nugent, daughter of a Catholic physician who had treated Edmund in Bath. Her husband attained fame as a writer, MP, and orator.
