Attributed to Sebastien Bourdon Italianate Landscape with a Monk and Peasants by a Fountain Oil on canvas 31 x 41 inches (78.8 x 104 cm) Provenance: H.G. Sperling (Sale: American Art Association/Anderson Galleries, Inc., February 3, 1938, , attributed to Nicolas Poussin Mr. Joseph Epstein Spanierman Gallery, New York Attributed to Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671), this painting has elements in common with Bourdon's The Return of the Ark in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1659) and Landscape with a Mill in the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (1653-57), including classicized figures in architectonic landscapes in the mode of Nicholas Poussin. An artist born in Montpellier, France, Bourdon trained in Paris and visited Italy from 1634 to 1647, where he studied the work of Poussin, Claude Lorrain and Caravaggio in Rome. Poussin was Bourdon's lifelong exemplar. Bourdon became court painter to Queen Christina of Sweden in 1652 and was an original member of the Paris Academy in 1664. Glue relined. Visible stretcher marks. Dense varnish layer revealing very little under UV light. One repaired hole to the right left arm of the figure seated at left. There is a repaired hole in the trees at the right center.
