Squibb, London, 30 June 1808, lot 71 or 72 (Four Studies by Sir Joshua Reynolds , where purchased by Thomas Moore Slade, Old Bond Street, London; Collection of Philip Gore, 4th Earl of Arran (1801-1884); His sale, Messrs. Puttick & Simpson, London, 15 July 1885, lot 199 (Sir Joshua Reynolds Studies 2, Dido and Cymon & Iphigenia); Purchased from the above by Lloyd; Private Oxford Collection until purchased by the present owner The present work is possibly an oil sketch for the prime version in the Royal Collection (inv. no.RCIN 404695).
