AUGUST SANDER Antlitz der Zeit -- Face of our Time. Introduction by Alfred Döblin. Munich: Transmare and Kurt Wolff, 1929. Quarto (297 x 225 mm). 60 black and white photographs. Original yellow cloth, spine and front cover printed in black, original printed dust-jacket (expert small repairs to the corners and ends of spine panel); original printed cardboard slipcase. Provenance: deleted contemporary inscription on front endpaper. FIRST EDITION. A VERY GOOD COPY IN THE RARE DUST-JACKET AND SLIPCASE. "One of the great documentary works of all times... IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO OVERESTIMATE THE INFLUENCE OF THIS WORK on later photography, documentary, and otherwise" ( 101 Books ). "Many of his classic images are included in this seminal photobook" ( The Photobook ). This penetrating work was seen as very dangerous when the Nazis came to power in 1933: copies still with the publisher were seized, and the printing plates were destroyed. 101 Books, pp.52-3; The Open Book, pp.84-5; The Photobook, vol.
