Median 2° (317 x 215mm). 264 leaves (collation as GW). Gothic types 1:74, 2:130, 4:92 and roman type 5:80, 65 lines of commentary and headline, double column with commentary surround. Full-page woodcut with two scenes on A1v, 9-line initial space opening text, 3-line initial spaces, with guide-letters, publisher's device B at end. [ Bound with :] LACTANTIUS, Lucius Coelius Firmianus (c.240-c.320) Opera , and other works. Venice: Bonetus Locatellus for Octavianus Scotus, 11 October 1494. Median 2°. 90 leaves (collation as BMC). Roman types 5:80, 6:105 and Greek type 80, 63 lines and headline, printed marginalia. White-on-black initials in 2 sizes, publisher's device B at end. (Short repaired tear in 2 leaves, dampstain in a few upper margins.) BINDING: contemporary blind-tooled fawn goatskin over wooden boards bound for Antonio Pillone by Belluno Bindery A, the sides panelled with multiple fillets, outer border of repeated knotwork tool, inner borders of repeated leafy tool and small crosses, initials 'B.C' in inner panel, evidence of early title label on upper cover, title label on lower cover, the spine in 4 compartments diapered with triple fillets, one (of 4) clasp fastening on the lower cover, one and a half vellum endleaves (some slight worming, small section at lower joint worn). Hobson (p.31) incorrectly states that all full-leather bindings by Bindery A have 5 brass bosses; there is no evidence that bosses formed part of the present binding. VECELLIO FORE-EDGE PAINTING: St. Augustine as Bishop of Hippo seated at a desk, a coastal city view in the background, authors' names lettered vertically, author and title of first work abbreviated and lettered horizontally. Top and bottom edges buff marbled with pale brown. The large woodcut in the first work is a copy in the Italian style of a woodcut used by Amerbach in his edition of the same work of February 1489 (see Schramm XXI, fig. 589).
