Auracarioxylon arizonicum Triassic Chinle Formation, Arizona Petrified wood is a fossil in which the organic remains of the original tree have been replaced by minerals. Part of this long "petrification" process generally involves a quartz chalcedony (agate) mineralization. Special rare conditions must have occurred for the fallen tree or branch to be transformed into petrified wood: in general, the fallen plant must be buried in an anaerobic environment (free of oxygen), which preserves the original cellular structure and general appearance. The other conditions include a regular access to mineral rich water in contact with the tissues, replacing the organic plant structure with inorganic minerals. The end result is petrified wood, a plant, with its original basic structure in place, replaced by stone. The present specimen is suitable for wall mounting as decorative display. This attractive slab has complete bark texture on all edges. It features the bright colors for which wood from this region is so prized and why specimens such as this have been dubbed "rainbow" wood. Measuring 16 x 15 x 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 in
