AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817).] Northanger Abbey: and Persuasion. With a Biographical Notice of the Author [by Henry Austen]. London: C. Rowarth [vols I-II], and T. Davison [vols III- IV] for John Murray '1818' [c. 20 December 1817]. 4 volumes, 12° (172 x 103mm). (Some spotting, lacking half-titles vols II-IV and final blanks IV/P7-8.) Contemporary half calf over marbled boards by J. Seacome, Chester, with his yellow or pink ticket in each volume, flat spines gilt in compartments divided by greek key rolls between double gilt filets, gilt red morocco lettering-pieces in two compartments, the others decorated with gilt tools, spine-ends decorated with foliate tools (extremities lightly rubbed, heads of 2 spines slightly chipped, boards a little rubbed causing minor paper loss on one). Provenance : Jane Panton (early inscriptions on all titles, some trimmed by binder) -- Bernard Quaritch, bookseller (pencilled collation note at the end of vol. I). FIRST EDITIONS OF BOTH NOVELS, IN A BINDING BY SEACOME OF CHESTER OF C.1820-1840. According to the author's sister, Cassandra, Northanger Abbey with its gentle pastiche of the Gothic novel was written in the years 1798-1799, although it has been suggested that 'a first version may have been written as early as 1794' (Gilson, p.82). Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice were both earlier in origin but were far more drastically revised before publication. Northanger Abbey therefore represents Jane Austen's style in its earliest public form. In 1803 she had sold the novel, then entitled Susan , to Richard Crosby and Son, a London publisher, for £10. When it failed to appear after six years, she asked Mr Crosby for information, to be told that he was under no obligation to publish it, and that she could have it back for the amount he had paid her. The novelist waited until 1816 to accept the offer, but despite preparing the manuscript for publication, she still held it back (changing the title from Susan to Catherine ; the final title was possibly supplied by Henry Austen). As a result, it only appeared posthumously with Persuasion in December 1817, prefaced by Henry Austen's 'Biographical Notice' of his sister. Persuasion , Austen's last novel was begun on 8 August 1815 and had been completed on 6 August, 1816. The two works were printed in varying specimens of Caslon Pica roman (volumes I-II by Roworth, volumes III-IV by T. Davison), and were published by John Murray in an edition of 1750 copies on a commission basis. This set is in an attractive contemporary binding by John Seacome of Chester, with his label 'Bound by , J. SEACOME. , Bookseller & Stationer . , CHESTER' in each volume (additionally, Seacome was also a publisher of works in English, Welsh, and French). Ramsden's Book Binders ... (Outside London) 1780-1840 gives 1828-40 as his period of activity, although he issued two French works in 1820, indicating that the binding dates from 1820-1840. Garside, Raven and Schöwerling 1818/19; Gilson A9; Keynes 9 (collation corrected by 1931 errata); Sadleir 62e. (4)
