AUSTRALIA] BOWEN, EMANUEL. A Complete Map of the Southern Continent . [London: circa 1744]. Engraved map. 15 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches (39.8 x 50.4 cm). A few discreet repaired tears, paper replacements to margins, center fold strengthened. With a 2005 certificate of authenticity from The Map House, London. The first English map of Australia and the second map devoted to Australia after Thevenot's 1664 Dutch map. Bowen saw great potential for Australia and the text of the map reads "whosoever perfectly discovers & settles it will become infallibly possessed of Territories as Rich, as fruitful, & as capable of improvement, as any that have been hitherto found out; either in the East Indies, of the West." A copy of this map was reportedly carried by Captain James Cook during his discovery of Australia's east coast a decade later. C
