AUSTRIA -- URBAR ZU GMÜND [Cadastral register of rate payers]. MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Gmünd, ca.1500.] 2° (318 x 248mm). 36 leaves. Written in black ink in a fine cursive bâtarde book hand; four leaves by another scribe in a gothic cursive secretary hand, initials touched in red, headings in red. CONTEMPORARY AUSTRIAN FLEXIBLE WALLET BINDING OF BROWN MOROCCO, profusely blind-tooled, on upper cover wide outer roll border of antlered stags and deer running through flowering bushes, inner roll of flowers and leafy tendrils, a second roll of acorns and three-petalled flowers, surrounding a central panel divided into lozenges by diagonal triple fillets, in each a leafy ornament surmounted by a bud, in upper two triangles a rhomb-shaped flower and in triangles at sides a 'Kopfstempel'; lower cover decorated with the same tools, but in rolls in different sequence continuing over the flap. Two decorated brass buckles attached by brass nails to upper cover and two leather clasps with brass finials to flap; plain spine with three supporting bands. Upper cover inscribed in ink GMÜND. In lined cloth case. An unusual document of Gmünd, a small town in Carinthia and the centre of a rural community. It lists sixty parishes surrounding the town, with a full list of inhabitants paying contributions and taxes to Gmünd. Those listed are mostly farmers, and there are full details of their produce (many growing hops) and social condition, a number apparently also employed by other farmers. At the end a list of taxes charged for goods in transit through the area "Vermerkt das gesatz der Maut und Aufflags zu Gmünd was von yeder gattung so man durch füret oder treibt zu nemen ist"; also "Vermerkt die Abgenng der güter im Urbar Gmünd", this last has contemporary annotations in ink. AN EXTREMELY RARE AUSTRIAN BINDING in fine condition, probably obtained in Vienna as a ledger book with blank vellum pages. Three of the tools have been identified as the Viennese 'Jagdrollen Meister' by I.Schunke, Die Schwenke-Sammlung gotischer Stempel , Beiträge zur Inkunabelkunde III,7. Berlin 1979. The flowering bud "Blattwerk mit Knospe offen" pl.53 no.465 (Wien Jagdrollen-Meister); the acorn roll, "Ranke" pl.227 no.184 (Aus Wien Jagd R) and the Kopfstempel pl.149 no.14 (Art Wien Jagdrollen-Meister)
