AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION -- ENGLISH AND CONTINENTAL HISTORY. A collection of fifteen autograph letters signed and letters and documents signed, 1534-1932, mostly by royalty, statesmen and politicians, a number addressed to Baron Koller, the Austrian ambassador to the Court of St James's, including: FRANÇOIS I, King of France . Letter signed to the Duke of Wirtamberg, St Germain en Laye, 4 March n.y. [1534], referring to a secret message to be transmitted by the bearer, half page, folio ; LOUIS XIV, King of France . Two letters signed to Pope Clement XI and Cardinal de' Medici ('Protecteur des affaires de France a Rome'), both Versailles, 1 November 1702, proposing a candidate to be Prior of Maruille in the diocese of Trèves; and two documents signed, military appointments for the Sieur de Sainte Marie [Claude de Pouilly]; together with two documents signed by Louis XV, a warrant and commission for the Sieur de Sainte Marie, 1 and 20 March 1725, and two letters with secretarial signatures of Louis XVI to the Baron de Pouilly, 1787; and letters and documents with signatures of: 1st Duke of WELLINGTON (autograph letter signed in 3rd person, 1840, robustly declining to become patron of a school 'to which he can be of no service whatever ... He has no relation with the Highlands of Scotland', and a secretarial letter to Baron Koller, in French), Benjamin DISRAELI (to Koller, 1849), Henry BROUGHAM (two letters to Koller), 2nd Viscount PALMERSTON (to Koller, 1827, and to Esterhazy, 1841), NAPOLEON III (recording gratutities to be paid to members of his guard, in pencil, n.d.), LEOPOLD II, King of the Belgians (1888), EUGENE, Prince of Savoy (to the Duke of Lorraine, 1724), Letizia BONAPARTE (letter signed with autograph subscription to a grandson, 'a[d]dio caro Lucciano, vi abbaccio e sono la vostra buona mama' [probably to Lucien, son of Caroline Bonaparte and Joachim Murat], saying that 'Votre Tante Pauline a parlé de votre progres a l'Empereur'), Jean-Baptiste COLBERT (1672), LOUIS, Duke of Vendôme (1705), Salomon de ROTHSCHlLD (asking for a passport for a visit to Spain, and a second one in the name of 'Stanislas von Reibels', in case he is kidnapped, n.d), and others including: F.J. Talma (French tragedian), Egon Erwin Kisch, Raymond Poincaré, and a 19th-century copy of an ode by Manzoni; and [GEORGE III], a folded leaf inscribed 'Jany 1815 The King's beard For dear Grandmama', enclosing a small quantity of predominantly white hair; altogether approximately 22 pages, mostly 8vo and 4to , integral blank leaves (some slightly browned and worn). + BI LOTS 52 and 72.
