AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION -- FRENCH RESISTANCE. A collection of autograph letters, signatures, signed programmes and photographs relating to the fund-raising activities of 'Les Amis des Volontaires Français' in England, 1941-1945. Signatories include
AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION -- FRENCH RESISTANCE. A collection of autograph letters, signatures, signed programmes and photographs relating to the fund-raising activities of 'Les Amis des Volontaires Français' in England, 1941-1945. Signatories include: General CHARLES DE GAULLE, signature on a 'Souvenir du 2S-137, Londres -- Cercle des Officiers de la France Combattante Dolphin Square' (together with those of 31 French military commanders including Lt Colonel de Lagatinerie, General Valin, General Catroux) and on an accompanying menu (with 18 others); General C.A. de Larminat, Commander of French forces in the West (typed letter signed to de Lagatinerie, 1944), Clementine Churchill (typed letter signed, 1943), King George of Greece (1942), George Clemenceau (1916) and Field Marshal B.L. Montgomery (signature); the collection also includes signed photographs, cut signatures and signed theatre and concert programmes by actors, film producers and writers, including George Bernard Shaw (autograph note signed, 28 June 1909, 'Lunch! Alas! I'm rehearsing...'), John Gielgud (signature dated 1943), Douglas Fairbanks Junior (cut signature, in pencil), Agatha Christie (signature), and signed photographs including John Mills, Noel Coward (1945), Françoise Rosé and Max Millar (1943), and various concert programmes signed by Charles Munch, Nicole Henriot (a gala evening in Liverpool in 1945), Yehudi Menuhin and Sir Emile Littler, as well as signatures of Queen Victoria (2) and George V and Queen Mary (both dated 1922); altogether approximately 120 items , pasted into two albums, the first indexed, 285 x 225mm , uniformly bound in green and white patterned papered boards (extremities worn).
