Harman Oates was keeper of the London Museum from 1919 to 1926, as well as a renown collector of historical pieces of jewellery, many of which are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum and other English cultural institutions. Princess Mary received Oates's gift after her visit to Lancaster House, then home of the London Museum.
