Autograph Letter Signed ("J. Ruskin"), 4 pp recto and verso, 8vo, Denmark Hill, London, July 27, 1866, to a gentleman at the Liverpool Institute, folds, else fine. Ruskin in political economic mode, declining to give a lecture in the industrial city of Liverpool for ideological reasons: "The object of all our active and leading minds is at present to make England the market and forge of the world. This ... is incompatible with any success in art ... Neither in a warehouse nor a blacksmith's shop can pictures be taken care of or seen to advantage: the architecture necessary for such establishments cannot be ornamental without being ridiculous ... All my favourite places of study—Venice—Rouen—and the rest—have been now destroyed by English commerce ... I cannot see the sky out of my own back windows any more—because of Commercial smoke, nor can I take a walk in the fields—because Commerce has turned them into Brickfields." Provenance: From the collection of Robert R. Raymo. See illustration.
