Title: Autograph manuscript of a lecture by Kesey with a section devoted to psychedelic drugs Author: Kesey, Ken Place: Pacific Grove, California Publisher: Date: August 1965 Description: 6 legal-size sheets, stapled together with a flyer for the The American Unitarian-Universalist Association and two sheets from an unidentified newsletter. Kesey spent 1965 as Artist-in-Residence at Stanford, and that summer he participated in a conference hosted by the American Unitarian-Universalist Association. This manuscript, from one of the lectures given at the conference, begins irreverently with bawdy limericks spoofing Emerson, and "that great American sensuousist [sic] Wally Whitman, from whom Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg received so much" before transitioning into a humorous paean to psychedelic drugs: "Oh glorious drug now pulsing, permeating around and thru my being---How are you called---oh dabs of chemicals, relaxing and liberating my Very Being, Posterior Pituitary, or oxytocin, are those your names? But no matter---nor does it, that the fools out there call it a spasmodic, muscle tightening, frightening, contracting agent. O, complete and whole hearted incestuousness, from which & soon to be released will carry a lasting taboo. Here I go---thrust out into the light of a snowy noel nite on this first day---my nostrils sensing hay and fodder because plugged there with, knowing that my now condition is to be alive in this world, in the beginning, and at both ends." A wonderful artifact from a key period of the Psychedelic Revolution when the Acid Tests were in full swing, LSD was still legal, and Kesey was one of its most outspoken advocates Lot Amendments Condition: Pages stapled at the corner, one page pulled loose from the staple, else very good.
