(John Caldwell) (1782-1850), Congress, Vice President (1825-1832). ALS, 1p, 8 x 9.75", Fort Hill (SC), Nov. 8, 1849. Addressed to H.M. Salmon, Esq. Back page franked letter sheet. Contents regarding an article Calhoun has read and is returning to Mr. Salmon. Some contemporaries, including Clay and Webster, considered Calhoun one of the most qualified men for the position who did not become President. He was elected to the House in 1811, resigned to become Monroe's Secretary of War in 1817. He served as Vice President under both John Quincy Adams and Jackson, but resigned when he felt Van Buren's influence on Jackson had become too great. Calhoun then was elected to the Senate where he served six terms. He was appointed to the State Department under Tyler when an explosion of a gun on the deck of "Princeton" killed 2 of Tyler's Cabinet. He returned to the Senate in 1845 where he served until his death in 1850. Condition:Usual folds, minor foxing and toning. Mounted on heavy paper along back left edge, large (period) ink spill across address.
