lot of 36. Most addressed to Oliver H. Smith (1794-1859), who represented Indiana in both the House and Senate. After his Congressional career, Smith worked for a railroad, as did many of these other politicians. Includes: Smith, Caleb Blood (1808-1864), Rep. from IN. ALS, 1p, 8 x 9.75", Connersville [IN], Aug. 6, 1841(?). In part: I shall regard it as a very special favour if you will ascertain whether any vacancies exist or are likely soon to be made... and whether there is any chance his friend could obtain the position. The Good Old Boys Network at work. Caleb Smith not only represented Indiana in Congress, but was Lincoln's Secretary of the Interior from 1861 to 1863 during the first half of the war.
