AUTOGRAPHS -- MORRISON, Alfred (1821-1897). Catalogue of the Collection of Autograph Letters and Historical Documents formed between 1865 and 1882 by Alfred Morrison. Compiled and annotated under the direction of A.W. Thibaudeau. [London]: Printed for Private Circulation (by Strangeways & Sons), 1883-1892. 6 volumes, 2 o. 166 photogravure plates (many folding), numerous illustrations. -- The Collection of Autograph Letters and Historical Documents Second Series . [London]: Printed for Private Circulation, 1893-1896. 3 vols. (all published), imperial 8 o. -- The Collection The Hamilton and Nelson Papers. [London]: Printed for Private Circulation, 1893-1894. 2 volumes, imperial 8 o. -- Les Reportes del Cases in Camera Stellata 1593 to 1600. From the Original MS of John Hawarde of the Inner Temple, edited by William P. Baildon. [London]: Privately Printed, 1894. 8 o. -- The Blessington Papers. [London]: Printed for Private Circulation, 1895. Imperial 8 o. -- The Bulstrode Papers (1667-1675). [London]: Printed for Private Circulation, 1896. Vol.I (all published), imperial 8 o. Together 6 works in 14 volumes (6 vols., 2° [380 x 285mm.], 7 vols., imperial 8 o [265 x 180mm.] and 1 vol. [255 x 190mm.]). 13 vols: original cloth-backed boards, 1 vol.: original blue cloth, gilt. THE MORRISON COLLECTION WAS ONE OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT COLLECTIONS OF AUTOGRAPH MATERIAL EVER ASSEMBLED IN PRIVATE HANDS, ("probably the choicest in the world" De Ricci, p. 188), and its sumptuously produced catalogue provides one of the major comprehensive aids to the identification and authentification of autographs, thanks to the vast number of reproductions given. Of the First Series only 200 copies were printed, and 250 of "Les Reportes;" no statement of limitation is given for the remaining volumes, all of which were also privately printed, but the number printed was probably also between 200 and 250 copies. The historical and literary importance of the contents of the letters and MSS. which are printed in full, make this large work a mine of information to the scholar. Morrison was the son of James Morrison entrepreneur and member of Parliament (cf. DNB ), one of the richest men in England. (14)
