A fascinating collection of signatures from several 19th-20th century artists, writers, and other figures. Lot of 8, includes: Collins, William Wilkie (1824-1889). Cut signature, "Wilkie Collins," 4.25 x 2.5 in., and partial cover, 4.5 x 3.75 in. Cut signature includes inscribed date, "February 35th, 1879." Cover has postage stamp affixed and London, 1879 postmark stamped at upper left corner. Cover addressed to an "Edwin H. Griffin" of New York City. William Wilkie Collins was an English novelist, playwright, and short story writer. He is best known for his works including The Woman in White (1859), No Name (1862), Armadale (1866), and The Moonstone (1868). (2) Humphrys, William (1794-1865). ALS "Will Humphreys," 2pp, 4.25 x 7 in., "St. John's Wood, London." May 2 and June 17, 1847. Both addressed to "Messrs Carey & Hart" of Philadelphia. Letters report progress on a series of plates Humphrys is working on, including some that are "so advanced that they will be soon completed" and others that need more work. Humphrys specifically mentions his work "The Leper & Absalom," about which he is waiting on a reply from Mr. Leutze (probably artist Emanuel G. Leutze). William Humphrys was an engraver working in the United States, England, and Ireland. Humphrys notably engraved illustrations for books by William Cullen Bryant and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, along many international postage stamps. Letters both have spots of separation/tearing at creases and edges, with a few spots of discoloration. Le Moyne, William J. (1831-1905). ALS "Wm. J. Le Moyne," 2pp, 4.4 x 6.9 in. June 11, 1895. Addressed to "Miss Aldrich." Letter tells the location of Le Moyne's birth along with some of his earliest recollections including the ringing chimes of the Old North Church in Boston, a military funeral at the same church, and a "great fire" at Copp's Hill in Charlestown. The letter ends with an apology from Le Moyne, "I'm sorry I cannot furnish you with the detail you deserve." Letter is written on stationery with address, "128, East Thirty Fourth Street" printed at top. William J. Le Moyne was an American actor most remembered for his role as Deacon Perry in the first stage production of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Letter has horizontal crease. Nicholson, Sir William (1872-1949). ALS "W. N.," 1p, 7.4 x 8 in. January 7, 1935. Letter reports that Nicholson will "not be back in time to attend the meeting," and asks recipient to apologize to a third party. Sir William Nicholson was a British painter, wood-engraver, illustrator, and children's book author. Nicholson was knighted in 1936, and has had his work exhibited in some of the finest galleries in Paris, London, and across western Europe. Letter has some soiling and discoloration from moisture. O'Connor, William Douglas (1832-1889). ALS "W. D. O'Connor," 6pp, 4.75 x 8 in., Washington, D. C. December 19, 1885. Addressed to E. C. Stedman. In this letter, O'Connor discusses a manuscript he is attempting to get published. William Douglas O'Connor is best known as a journalist and friend of Walt Whitman's. Letter pages are separated at crease, with repair. Reade, Charles (1814-1884). Cut signature, 5.75 x 2.25 in., and partial cover, 3.75 x 2.5 in. Cut signature includes inscription reading, in part, "This autograph Mania is a terrible inflection(?)" Cover has two postage stamps affixed and London, 1880 postmark stamped at upper right corner. Charles Reade was an English writer of novels and dramas, known best for his novel, The Cloister and the Hearth (1861), set in 15th century Europe. Lot also includes an ALS "C. Herschell," 4pp, 4.5 x 7 in., written on stationery from Bedford Gardens, Kensington. December 4, 1907, describing the death of the writer's wife. Letter has some tearing and wear at creases.
