Lot of 8. Includes: Geoffrey Schomberg Arbuthnot (1885-1957). British Vice Admiral. ALS on stationery with "The Vicarage / Stratford-on-Avon," Sept. 6, 1907. Writing to Major Pond (see 1958569). Henry James (1803-1877). British Major General. ALS Southampton, 18 May 1866. On Ordnance Survey Office letterhead. James was described as the Ordnance Survey's "most eccentric and egotistical Director General." He is responsible for introducing photography into the mapping process in England. Marc Antoine Bonnin de la Bonniniere de Beaumont (1763-1830). ALS, 4 Mai 1799, in French. French nobleman and member of the Old Regime army, later fought under Napoleon. Charles H. Bell (1798-1875). US Navy. Clipped signature. Fought in War of 1812, the Second Barbary War and the American Civil War. He spent most of the Civil War in command of the Pacific Squadron before being transferred to the James River (VA). He retired with the rank of Rear Admiral. (2) Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912). Two signed cards, the other with "Hdqrs Dept of the East / Governors Island / April 10th 1906." Signature with "Major General USA / Commanding." Son of President U.S. Grant, Frederick served in the army for 23 years, during the Indian Wars and Spanish-American War. He became Military Governor of Pampanga. Between the wars he served as Minister to Austria-Hungary under Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland. Henry Clark Corbin (1842-1909). Clipped signature. Corbin was a "lifer," serving from the Civil War through the Spanish American War (1862-1906). A native of Clermont County, Ohio, between the wars he also served on R.B. Hayes' staff at the White House and was attending James A. Garfield when he was shot in 1881. Corbin was also present at Garfield's death. He joined the Adjutant General's Department in 1880. He was promoted to Adjutant General and given the rank of Brigadier General in 1898, and to Major General in 1900. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. William Lassiter (-1924). TLS on Fort McDowell Recruit Depot letterhead, June 16, 1914. Colonel, US Army. Attended USMA (Cullum # 3304). Fought in the Spanish American War where he was wounded. Buried at Arlington. Letter is to a woman about a relative who fought at San Juan Hill.
