Paris: Gervais Alliot, 1638. 2° (357 x 237mm). Full-page engraved portraits of Schomberg and of Cardinal Cesare Baronio two half-page emblematic engravings after Niceron, reproduction of both sides of a medal struck for Auzolles, and two smaller emblematic engravings, all by Jean Picart (tear in A1 without loss of text). Contemporary dark citron morocco gilt and painted, BOUND FOR PRESENTATION TO THE DEDICATEE, outer border of both covers a lion rampant (the heraldic device of Schomberg), alternating with the face of a smiling sun surrounded by rays (the emblem of the d'Auzolles, legendary descendants of Apollo), surrounding the painted large arms of Schomberg in gold, silver and colours, surmounted by a ducal coronet and a canopy upheld by two leopards, below a scroll with the d'Auzolles motto Si Distrahis Arctas , in each corner a ducal coronet surmounting an arabesque; spine with raised bands in seven compartments, one containing the title, the others alternate rampant lions and the sun within double-fillet border, marbled endpapers. (Minor discolouration and occasional loss of paint, very minor abrasions, the silver paint oxidised, but generally in very good condition). In lined buckram case. A remarkable and highly unusual French 17th-century binding, beautifully executed. Auzolles was an eccentric, who prided himself as a master of the science of chronology. However, according to the Dictionnaire Biographique Francaise , vol.IV, 802-803, "Ses ouvrages qui ne manquent pas d'originalité sont sans valeur historique". In 1633 he published a bizarre genealogy of Job, which was attacked by Père Petau who mocked his ideas of chronology. This was followed by an acrimonious dispute and resulted in two further works by Petau and three replies by Auzolles. The Mercure charitable , the last work in this dispute, contains many eulogies and panegyrics to Auzolles and his views of chronology. The portrait of Cardinal Baronio contains a dedication to Auzolles as 'Prince de Cronologistes'. The dedicatee, Charles de Schomberg (1601-56), duke of Hallewin, was Mareschal de France and governor of Languedoc. On the verso of f.14 is a complete listing of Auzolles's works.
