An Enquiry Into Viewers' Opinions on Television Programmes, first quarter 1939, two letters on Alexandra Palace headed Portland paper: dated 10th February 1939 asking the television license holder for full name, address and answers to questions on (absent) separate sheet relating to quality, range and content of television programmes aired; the other dated April 1939 thanking holder for name and address and the full questions to be answered on separate sheet (absent); and the final report dated 26th June 1939 with the collected information from viewers' answers, worked out in both plain type and percentages, appendices, tables and charts, the sales of sets between 1931-1939, with annotations and minor corrections in two hands, and a copy of the questionnaire, highlights include: ..that when there is any fault in transmission, whether on vision or sound, an announcement or signal should immediately be given. This is asked for in order that viewers may not find themselves twiddling knobs in-effectively when the fault was in the transmission...they would like to see a television tour behind the scenes at Alexandra Palace, showing how things work...there is a demand for a children's hour...extraneous noises, footsteps, bumps and bangs were sometimes distracting [in a stage performance]...[question]Do you prefer men or women as announcers? [answer] Men 2%, Women 54%, no preference 43%.
