BABBAGE, Charles (1792-1871). The Exposition of 1851; or Views of the Industry, the Science, and the Government, of England . London: John Murray 1851. 8 o (215 x 131 mm). Contemporary sheep, gilt spine, gilt coat-of-arms on covers, morocco lettering piece (some wear to edges, corners and spine, joints cracked). Provenance : William R. Allen (Edinburgh school prize bookplate). FIRST EDITION. The Great Exhibition of 1851, held in the famous Crystal Palace, was intended to showcase British arts and industry. Although his name was proposed, Babbage was not named to the commission in charge of the industrial part of the exhibition. Resenting this, he published The Exposition of 1851 to express the views he would have presented to the organizers. After reviewing the history of the idea of the exhibition, he made practical proposals for its organization. He also took the opportunity to describe his Difference Engine, which was not displayed at the fair. Norman 95.
