Former St. Louis Cardinals great, Pepper Martin, who was a collector even then, paid the person who caught the ball a twenty dollar gold piece for the ball. Martin, a member of the opposing National League team, then had the ball signed by Ruth and twelve other American League All Stars including Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Tony Lazzeri, Jimmy Dykes, Ed Rommel, Lefty Grove, General Crowder, Earl Averill, Lefty Gomez and Joe Cronin. The ball has been in Martin's family ever since and has been the subject of several news articles about its history. It has been consigned by members of Pepper Martin's family and is offered with three letters of Authenticity. Aside from Ruth's sixtieth home run ball in 1927, this is perhaps the most significant home run ball ever hit by Ruth. The ball has darkened from shellac and age.
