BINDING: 17th-century Roman dark red morocco by the Andreoli workshop for Pope Urban VIII [not before 6 August, 1623], the papal arms tooled in gilt and surrounded by a fanfare design, flat gilt spine (spine restored, shield on upper cover chipped with slight loss, lower cover chipped with loss at upper right hand corner of border, ties lacking). PROVENANCE: Pope Urban VIII (binding) -- Almagià. RARE ORATION ON THE ELECTION OF LEO XI BOUND WITH THE ARMS OF THE DEDICATEE, MAFFEO BARBERINI (1568-1644), AS POPE URBAN VIII. The dedication is signed 'Barcellini' rather than Baccellini and dated 16 April, 1605; at which time Barberini was papal nuncio in Paris, and a powerful influence on Henry IV, while Baccellini was confessor to Maria de Medici. Leo XI (Alessandro Ottaviano de'Medici) died less than two weeks after publication of the oration, and just twenty-seven days after succeeding to the papacy. Barberini himself was elected pope on 6 August, 1623. Although José Ruysschaert only dates the activity of Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli from 1651 in his catalogue of the 1992 Vatican exhibition, Les frères Andreoli Relieurs des Chigi (p. 6), the Andreoli were already in fact active in the reign of Urban VIII. Particularly attractive is the way in which the three bees on the papal shield are reprised in smaller, massed form at the borders; the three larger bees are tooled on an onlay. Not in BLSTC 17th-century Italian .
