BAILLIE, Matthew. A Series of Engravings, accompanied with Explanations, which are intended to illustrate the morbid Anatomy of some of the most important parts of the Human Body. London: W. Bulmer & Co. for J. Johnson and G. and W. Nicol, 1803. 2 o (318 x 243 mm). 73 engraved plates after watercolor drawings by William Clift (some minor foxing and marginal dampstaining to some plates). Contemporary half calf and mottled boards (minor rubbing and slight wear to corners and edges). Provenance : Samuel Thomas von Soemmering (1755-1830, pencil inscription from T. Osborn, F.R.S. on verso half title); Herbert McLean Evans (bookplate). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, previously published in ten parts, from 1799-1802. "The complete work [as here], with additional half-title, dedication (to Dr. Pitcairn) and index, was issued in 1803; for this edition, the first fascicule was reprinted in slightly larger type, so that some lines have fewer words and some paragraphs more lines than in the first printing" (Norman). The first collection of pathological illustrations. The work was intended to accompany the author's Morbid anatomy , but nevertheless includes detailed explanations of each plate. A FINE ASSOCIATION: presented by T. Osborn of the Royal Society to Soemmering (see lot 265), the German anatomist.
