BOUND BY THE ATELIER OF THE IMPRIMERIE ROYALE FOR THE DUC DE NEMOURS: contemporary gold-tooled crimson straight-grained morocco, double fillet surrounding a frame of 'rocaille' ornaments connected by curved fillets, the Duke's initials LO in the center within a laurel wreath and surmounted by the royal crown (Olivier 2585 fer 2), smooth spines decorated with curved fillets, 'rocaille' tools and lettering, roll-tooled turn-ins and board-edges, turquoise silk liners, gilt edges, (minor repair to several joints). Folding cloth boxes. Provenance : Louis-Charles-Philippe-Raphaël d'Orléans, duc de Nemours (1814-96, second son of King Louis-Philippe), by inheritance to his son -- Duc de Vendome. Rare catalogue of all the French naval and colonial libraries, an ambitious project that required the cooperation of numerous librarians in Paris, the ports, and places as far-flung as Pondicherry and Guadeloupe. Bajot was assisted by Maurice Angliviel, who catalogued charts, maps and plans, Solvet and De Courtière who worked at the library of the ministry in Paris. The Duc de Nemours, who was an important book collector, was much interested in the navy and especially the colonies, having participated in the conquest of Algeria. His library was only dispersed at auction in 1931-32. The Imprimerie Royale atelier executed utilitarian bindings for the ministries, but was also capable of producing de-luxe work for its Royal patrons and for presentation purposes. These bindings for the Duc de Nemours are particularly successful for the handsome treatment of the wide spines (10 cm for vol.2). Brunet VI, 31451.
