Idar-Oberstein, Germany Agate has been mined along the Nahe River Valley in Germany since the 1400s. The Nahe River was used to provide power the grinding wheels for stone cutting in Idar-Oberstein. When the agate deposits along the riverbed were exhausted gem cutters in Idar began to import agates from Brazil. These two antique objects made with local agates of the Idar River probably in the early 19th century. The match safe, is formed of two rounded pieces of translucent agate joined to form a cylinder, the color banding well-matched at the side seam of the gilded mounting, with hinged lid and an striker surface suitable for “non-safety” matches, length 2 ¾ in; together with a wax seal formed of tapering design formed of carved banded agate, having monogram initials engraved in the brass plate,length 2 ½ in.
