Contemporary calf gilt, covers with central gilt ducal crest of Buccleuch, upper spine panel with coronetted initials "BQ" (Buccleuch & Queensberry) (worn with losses to spines, some covers becoming loose). Provenance : Richard Heber (1773-1833) (stamp on flyleaf in vol. I, his sale, Part V, 1835, lot 133, £2.1.0 to Thorpe). The catalogue of the celebrated library of Sir Joseph Banks, the eminent naturalist and traveler who accompanied Cook on his first circumnavigation (1768-1771), and who served as President of the Royal Society for over forty years. Banks' library was the most important private collection of books on natural history known at the time. The compiler, Jonas Dryander, a Swedish botanist, had been a student of Linnaeus, and was vice-president of the Linnaean Society, as well as a fellow and librarian of the Royal Society.
