BARBERIIS, Philippus de (fl.1475-81). Discordantiae sanctorum doctorum Hieronymi et Augustini. -Sybillarum et prophetarum de Christo vaticinia . -- PROBA FALCONIA. Cento vergilianus . -- ps-THOMAS AQUINAS. Praefatio super symbolum Athanasii (and other texts). [Rome: Georgius Teutonicus (Lauer?) and] Sixtus Riessinger, [ca. 1482]. Chancery 4° (206 x 146mm). Collation: [1 10 2-7 8 8 10 ] (1/1r blank, 1/1v headings, 1/2r text, full woodcut border, 8/10r printer's device, 8/10v blank). 68 leaves (the first leaf supplied from another copy). 28 lines. Type: 2:75G, 3:109R, 4:93G. 13 woodcuts, 12 of Sibyls and one of Proba Falconia, full woodcut border to 1/2r, woodcut vine-decoration initials, printer's device, some initials with red colouring, some red paragraph marks. (Slight damage to corner of woodcut border repaired, first leaf repaired with lower margin renewed, repair at upper inner margin of final 11 lvs. touching text but with loss of 3 letters only.) Modern red morocco, single fillets in gilt and blind, g.e. Third edition. As pagan figures prophesying Christ, the Sibyls were given great credence in the Middle Ages. Their number could vary, but commonly, as here, they number 12 to match the 12 minor prophets of the Old Testament. The Sibyls also featured in art, most notably on Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, where they join the prophets. Passages from Vergil had been used to substantiate the Sibyls' prophecies, and so it is appropriate that the Cento vergilianus was printed together with them in this edition. Written by the 4th-century Proba Falconia, it is one of the earliest works in the medieval tradition christianizing Vergil. With variant reading on 2/1r roseo ueste . HCR 2453; GW 3887; BMC IV, 129 (IA. 19240-41); Goff B-120; Pellechet 1841; Sander 774.
