BARBOSA RODRIGUES, Joao (1842-1909).
Brussels: Imprimerie Typographique Veuve Monnom, 1903. 2 volumes, 2 o (610 x 415 mm). Half-titles. Photogravure portrait mounted on india paper, lithographic facsimile of autographs by 24 members of 2nd "Congres Cientifico Latino Americano," 174 chromolithographic plates. (Some leaves frayed and chipped at edges mostly at beginning, some plates or text leaves with tape re-inforcement , some minor worming, some plates creased, plates 74, 90, 91 in volume one, and plate 10 in volume two torn crossing image and tape repaired on verso). Original cloth portfolios (worn, flaps missing). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF RODRIGUES' FINE WORK ON THE PALM TREES OF BRAZIL. The author travelled widely in Brazil between 1868 and 1897, pursuing his anthropological studies and assembling a large collection of botanical specimens, particularly relating to orchids. He was appointed director of the Manaos botanical museum in 1883, where he stayed until 1889, when he was appointed director of the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro. In keeping with his interest in anthropology, the plates to Sertum palmarum Brasiliensium often show figures of Amazonian tribesmen around the trees in their landscapes; other plates give botanical details of the leaves and fruits. Originally issued loose in portfolios by Carabin-Schildknecht of Brussels. Arnold Arboretum p.58; Nissen BBI 1660 (both erroneously calling for two portraits); BM(NH) VI, p.57; Stafleu & Cowan 9358.
