BARRELIER, JACQUES. Plantae per Galliam, Hispaniam et Italiam observatae, iconibus aeneis exhibitae.. Opus posthumum, accurante Antonio de Jussieu... in lucem editum. Paris: Estienne Ganeau, 1714. Folio, 384 x 256 mm., contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, upper joint cracked at tail, inner hinge split, a few small chips to covers, engraved and letterpress title detaching, some marginal dampstaining, a few text leaves a bit discolored . FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, LARGE-PAPER COPY, 2 parts in one (text and plates) additional engraved title repeated for each part, letterpress general title, 334 engraved plates with 1324 figures of plants, plus 3 full-page plates of shells, approbation leaf at end; figures 111 and 112 (plate E1) printed upside down. Hunt 432; Nissen BBI 80. Barrelier, a Dominican priest who botanized widely in France, Spain and Italy, collecting many unknown plants, was preparing this edition for publication and had already had the plates engraved in Rome (by an unknown artist) when he died suddenly in 1673. His manuscripts were later destroyed in a fire. Antoine de Jussieu discoved the plates nearly 40 years later and had them published with his own text. Provenance : Bibliothèque du Grand Séminaire, Coutances, inkstamp on title and in margin of one text leaf.
