Artist: Barrie Cooke HRHA (1931-2014) Title: Glacier III (1992) Medium: oil on canvas Size: 137 x 137cm (53 x 53in) Signature: signed, titled & dated 1992 on reverse Provenance: Kerlin Gallery, Dublin (label verso) Private Collection More info: Click to read more about this lot Barrie Cooke was born in Cheshire in 1931. Cooke was an abstract expressionist painter and lived and worked in Ireland since 1954. Cooke travels widely and his richly expressionist, semi-abstract paintings have been strongly influenced by time spent in such far-flung places as Lapland, New Zealand, Borneo and Malaya. Nature in its infinite variety and irresistible flux is his chosen environment and subject matter. Regarded as an important period in Cooke's career, Glacier III is a fine example which shows his empathy with nature the landscape and light. The use of dilute paint beautifully captures the wonderful light of this wilderness landscape. Cooke was a member of Aosdána, and the Royal Hibernian Academy and has exhibited widely throughout Europe, the US and Canada. His work is represented in such collections as the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Ulster Museum, the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), the Haags Gemeente Museum (The Hague), and other public and private collections worldwide.
