Original cloth gilt, gilt edges, later gilt calf box. Provenance . Lydia Edith Hughes-Hughes (bookplate). An interesting copy extra-illustrated with a collection of letters, photographs signed, autograph sentiments and signatures mostly of literary, musical or dramatic figures, laid down or inscribed directly against their birthdates, and including: Lev Nikolaevich TOLSTOY (1828-1910). Carte-de-visite photograph signed ('Leo Tolstoy' in roman script), three-quarter length portrait of the writer in old age, 121 x 82mm ; autograph letters signed by S.T. COLERIDGE (3 November 1843), Benjamin DISRAELI (5 January 1870, offering repayment of a debt), Michael Faraday (22 August 1862, referring to lighthouses), Alfred, Lord Tennyson (letter signed, 5 October 1861, giving permission to publish 'The time draws near the birth of Christ' with music), John Ruskin (to his father), W.M. Thackeray, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, and others; an autograph quotation signed by W.S. GILBERT (four lines from The Yeomen of the Guard , Act 1), a sketched self-portrait in pen-and-ink by William Orpen photograph signed by Pablo de Sarosate, and signatures of Thomas Edison, William Wordsworth Charles Dickens Hannah More, Edvard Grieg, George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling and others ( 91 in total ).
