BARTLETT, JOSIAH, Signer (New Hampshire) . Autograph letter signed ("Josiah Bartlett"), to fellow delegate John Langdon in Portsmouth, Philadelphia, 8 January 1776. 1 page, folio, partial fold separations, a small patch at center fold with partial loss of several words. [ with ] Autograph free frank ("frank J. Bartlett New Hampshire") as a delegate to Congress, on folded cover sheet addressed in Bartlett's hand, brown "9/IA" Franklin mark, separated from letter above, otherwise in good condition. PREPARING FOR WAR WITH GREAT BRITAIN A fine 1776 letter regarding the war preparations being made behind the scenes by the Secret Committee of Congress, while the last efforts to reconcile the colonies and the crown were made. "The Congress have ordered the Secret Committee to purchase & bring in for the use of the navy and army sundry articles which were under consideration before you left the Congress...the Committee have directed me to inform you, that they are willing [a] vessel should be sent from our Colony for that use, if a proper Loading for the European market...can be purchased....you may Charter a vessel & procure a Loading, and forthwith inform this Committee that they may Direct what goods and the quantity you are to send for; and remit you the money to pay for the cargo...You will see the necessity of this Committee being informed...as speedily as possible. Last Saturday Major Patton's brigade arrived with above fifty tons of salt peter and a few Days before another vessel brought 3 tons & a half of powder....Please to inform me of the present situation of our Colony affairs and Dont forget to put our Convention in Mind to send somebody here to relieve me as soon as convenient...." Langdon (1741-1891), took a special interest in naval preparation and commissioned several vessels for government service. Apparently unpublished, not in The Papers of Josiah Bartlett , ed Frank C. Mevers (Hanover, New Hampshire, 1979). (2)
