Property from the Eric C. Caren Collection(BASEBALL)A very early mention of baseball in The Sun, No. 169. New York: Published by Benj. H. Day & Geo. W. Wisner, Wednesday, March 19, 1834 4to, 4 pages (12 3/8 x 9 3/8 in.; 315 x 240 mm) on a bifolium of wove paper, allegorical woodcut vignette of a printing press in masthead, text in three columns; light foxing and marginal staining, disbound. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. The earliest procurable reference to baseball in an American newspaper. Among the brief news items gathered on the third page is this terse notice: "A young man named Geo. Goble, residing near Wilkes-barre, Pa. while playing ball, a few days since, accidentally received a blow from a ball club, from the effects of which he died in twenty four hours after." The report of the death of the unfortunate Mr. Goble was reprinted in the Rhode Island Republican (Vol. 25, No. 3), March 26, 1834.Condition ReportCondition as described in catalogue entry.
