[BASEBALL] ORAM, L[OUIS]. Original watercolor "House on Cor Broome and Orchard Sts./Birthplace of Alonzo Slote". [New York: after 1830]. Watercolor on Whatman Turkey Mill paper with manuscript text below image, signed "L. Oram" lower left, image 15 x 17 inches (38 x 43.5 cm); framed. Some toning, not examined out frame. A finely rendered watercolor depicting the corner of Orchard and Broome Street in today's Lower East Side. Alonzo Slote, born 1830, was a clothier with a connection to early New York baseball history as he is listed as the vice president of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York, the first organized baseball club to wear uniforms and play under rules similar to today's game. Slote's brother Daniel Slote, Jr., was Mark Twain's roommate and the basis of a character in The Innocents Abroad. C Estate of Leo Hershkowitz
