"THE SULTAN OF SWAT" AND TWO OF THE GREATEST MANAGERS OF ALL TIME. A clear, sharp photo of Ruth before the start of either the 1930 or 1931 World Series (the Cardinals and Athletics tilted against each other in the fall classic both years). Ruth is squeezed into a double-breasted suit at far left (a Liberty Bell pin on his lapel). Street, the Cardinals manager, is in his uniform. Ruth is in the declining phase of his career, and taking an unusual sabbatical from the World Series, as Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics prepare to take on Gabby Street's Cardinals. John McGraw, standing at far left, was no stranger to the World Series either. The former skipper of the New York Giants appeared in nine series, winning three. Altrock was a long-time player coach and pitcher for the White Sox and Senators, in a career that spanned from 1898-1933. Christy Walsh (1871-1955), was a sports media pioneer, starting his own newspaper syndicate of ghost-written articles by athletes on sporting events.
