Title: Baseball signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as six members of the 1932 Chicago Cubs Author: Place: Publisher: Date: [c.1932] Description: Official National League baseball made by Spalding, signed in ink by Franklin D. Roosevelt, and six members of the 1932 Chicago Cubs: Johnny Moore (played for the Cubs, Reds, and Phillies); Mark Koenig (played for the Yankees, Tigers, Cubs, Reds and Giants); Charlie Root (played for St. Louis Browns and the Cubs); Billy Herman (played for the Cubs, Dodgers, Braves and Pirates); Marvin Gudat (played for Cubs and Reds); and Bill (Billy) Jurges (played for the Cubs and Giants). Though the baseball has on it the ink date of 1929, the only year all of these players were on one team was 1932, with the Cubs, and it may be surmised that Franklin Roosevelt, campaigning during the 1932 presidential elections, stopped by a game at Wrigley Field and signed this baseball along with six stalwarts of the Cubs. Franklin Roosevelt had a great love for baseball, he threw out the first pitch 11 times, more than any President. Roosevelt, stricken as he was with polio, joked that he would attend more games if he didn't have to climb the steps. But he chose his spots well, arriving at the games in a convertible surrounded by Secret Service agents. Roosevelt was in the stands for Babe Ruth's called shot on Oct. 1, 1932 and in 1937 he became the first president to attend an All-Star Game. Roosevelt's signature is quite clear and well executed, although those of the ballplayers are decidedly less so. Lot Amendments Condition: Some aging and wear, it perhaps survived a few games before being signed; very good. Item number: 261588
