The Artist or, Young Ladies' Instructor in Ornamental Painting, Drawing, &c. consisting of lessons in Grecian painting, Japan painting, Oriental tinting, Mezzotinting, Transferring, Inlaying and manufacturing ornamental articles for Fancy Fairs.
London: Chapman & Hall, 1835. Small 8vo (6 3/8 x 4 inches; 163 x 103mm). Half-title, 2pp. publisher's advertisements at back. "Baxter-print" frontispiece "Cattle Drinking" after Thomas Gainsborough and floral ornamental border on half-title, both printed in colors by George Baxter from multiple woodblocks, 16 uncolored lithographed plates by Day & Haghe, 35 small illustrations. Original green cloth, blocked on gilt on upper cover and spine. Condition : some light spotting, chiefly to blank margins of lithographs; minor wear and light stains to cover, lacking rear free endpaper. first and only edition with an early example of a baxter print . a fascinating art instruction book prepared by a teacher who had provided instruction for many years to "absent pupils" via a correspondence course and now publishes his methods to make these teachings more available. It is the author's only work, and was issued the same year George Baxter was granted a patent for printing his famous colored prints (October 1835). Gandee comments in his preface: "The frontispiece is a very successful specimen of a new Art …. It is done by taking successive impressions from wood blocks … no less than twelve are used in this instance ..." George Baxter (1804-1867) stands as a pioneering figure in the production of successful color prints for the commercial market. This frontispiece is amongst his earliest book illustrations. Joan M. Friedman, Color Printing in England 1486-1870 (New Haven: Yale Center for British Art, 1978) #45; C. T. Courtney Lewis, The Story of Picture Printing in England during the Nineteenth Century (London 1928); Ruari McLean, Victorian Book Design (London: Faber and Faber, 1972), pp 38/9.
