London: J.M. Dent & Co. 1893-1894. 3 vols., 4to, original vellum, covers and spines with gilt-blocked design by Beardsley, t.e.g., others uncut, inner joints split, some offsetting and browning, half niger morocco gilt slipcases, with gilt lion passant stamp. LIMITED EDITION, no. 143 of 300 copies on Dutch handmade paper of an edition of 1800 copies, 2 photogravure frontispieces, 18 full-page wood engravings, numerous text illustrations, designs for chapter headings, and borders, all by Beardsley, vignettes on titles and initials printed in red. WITH 19 OF AUBREY BEARDSLEY'S ORIGINAL BLACK INK AND GRAPHITE DRAWINGS FOR 15 CHAPTER HEADINGS, THREE INITIALS AND THE PUBLISHER'S TITLE-PAGE VIGNETTE, mounted on separate sheets and tipped in near the published illustrations throughout. Although Dent's vignette device on the title-pages of the flower and serpent, and the intial letters, are printed in red, the original drawings are executed here in Beardsley's customary black. The drawings are mostly larger than the published versions which appear as follows: Vol. 1: title-page vignette, pp. 20, 64, 106, 262, 266; Vol. 2: pp. 292, 298, 338, 384, 400, 508, 540, 586, 598; Vol. 3: pp. 676, 740, 756, 874. Gallatin 33; Ray England 314 (also illustrating an original drawing for a chapter heading). Provenance : "M.E.G." gilt monogram on slipcases. (3)
